MTV's rebooted 'TRL': No music videos, plenty of awkwardness

After nearly 10 years off the air, MTV brought back TRL on Monday, and it was a bit of a disaster, to say the least.

Like the old TRL, which ran from 1998 to 2008, the reboot has a live audience in the studio and on the street below. Unlike the old TRL, the new one, at least so far, falls in line with the rest of MTV programming and doesn’t actually play any music videos. But the show makes up for that oversight with plenty of slip-ups and miscues.

What music did make it into the show came in the form of live performances. The Migos kicked things off with their song “Too Hotty,” testing the censors. Ed Sheeran later performed two songs in what would make up most of the bearable moments of the show.

Other than that TRL consisted mostly of unnecessary yelling into the mic and unintended silences. Like when host DC Young Fly tried going to DJ Khaled for his thoughts on the horrific shooting in Las Vegas. The camera cut to Khaled, who sat in silence. This sort of thing happened multiple times, but in this instance the silence lasted for nearly 30 seconds.

The only other bright spot besides Ed Sheeran came in the form of a 6-year-old rapping.
