MTV VMAs 2020 to Take Place in Brooklyn With “Limited or No Audience,” Gov. Cuomo Says

New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has said that the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards will take place at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Sunday, August 30, Billboard and Entertainment Tonight report. According to Billboard, the governor said at at a press conference that “the event will follow all safety guidance, including limited or no audience.” Pitchfork has reached out to MTV representatives for comment and more information.

An MTV representative previously confirmed that the company was exploring multiple options for the VMAs, including the traditional arena ceremony to take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The company also discussed possibly pivoting the VMAs to virtual performances or an audience-free show.

The VMAs last took place in Brooklyn in 2013.

Last year’s VMAs featured a career-spanning Video Vanguard performance from Missy Elliott, plus performances from Rosalía, Lizzo, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Lil Nas X, Normani, and others.
