MTV Unplugged Honors NJ Hip-Hop Legends With “Jersey’s Finest” Music Special

The ongoing Hip-Hop 50 festivities continue, only this time, the spotlight is on New Jersey. MTV is premiering a special episode of Unplugged that solely focuses on celebrating Hip-Hop heavyweights from the Garden State.

The show lineup is stacked with legendary names like Queen Latifah, Wyclef Jean, Redman, Naughty By Nature’s own Treach, Poor Righteous Teachers, Heather B, and pioneers The Sugarhill Gang. Musical direction was provided by from Emmy-winning artist, Adam Blackstone.

A notable preview of the night includes Wyclef’s “Hips Don’t Lie” performance, which doubles as a nice nod to him presenting Shakira with the VMA Video Vanguard earlier this year at the 2023 VMAs. Take a look at Wyclef performing his electrifying verse the double-platinum hit.

The aforementioned artists and plenty more all joined forces on-stage for a once-in-a-lifetime episode of the iconic music series taped at the historic Newark Symphony Hall. Additional performances can be expected from Lady Luck and Lords of the Underground solidify salute to Jersey.

“MTV Unplugged Presents: A Hip-Hop 50th Celebration of Jersey’s Finest” will debut on Thursday, Dec. 14 at 9PM ET/PT on MTV in the US and globally. BET Media Group will encore the special on Friday, 12/15 on BET and Tuesday, 12/19 on VH1, at 8 PM ET/PT respectively.

Earlier this month, the Recording Academy also held a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the storied genre. The GRAMMY Salute to 50 Years of Hip-Hop tribute show premiered on Dec. 10 and boasted appearances from a long list of icons like Big Daddy Kane, Doug E. Fresh, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, LL Cool J, and more.
