Ms. Lauryn Hill Postpones Philadelphia Concert Due to Doctor's Orders: 'I Need to Rest My Voice'

The R&B star is currently on 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' 25th anniversary tour

Ms. Lauryn Hill is looking out for her health.

On Sunday, the Grammy winner, 48, announced she was postponing the Philadelphia date of her tour in support of the 25th anniversary of her seminal, debut album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The R&B star explained that doctors advised her to reschedule the show to prevent potential damage to her vocal cords.

Hill shared a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter) and Instagram about the cancellation. “It is with disappointment that I am writing this note to you. On the advice of my physicians, I have no choice but to postpone the show tomorrow,” the “Ready or Not” singer wrote of her show scheduled on Monday at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Arena. “I need to rest my voice to prevent any more serious strain or damage to my vocal cords.”

Later in the post, the music icon explained that the show will be rescheduled for Nov. 25 and called it “a special one.”

In the “Doo Wop (That Thing)” singer’s statement, she also opened up about how great of an experience it’s been being back on the road and celebrating her only studio album. She shared, “The start of this tour has been incredible. What an amazing experience to celebrate this anniversary with all of my family, my friends and all of you.”

“I look forward to giving you the show you deserve with a fully recovered and healthy voice,” the singer-songwriter added.

The “Ex-Factor” artist also mentioned that after a few days of rest, she’ll resume her shows as scheduled starting on Thursday in Toronto.

The Fugees, Hill’s band also featuring members Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, has been co-headlining the tour and also re-shared her statement on Instagram.

In August, the hip-hop icon announced the run of shows in honor of her Grammy-winning debut’s milestone anniversary. The concerts kicked off in September, and in early October, the recording artist expanded the tour with new dates in cities like San Francisco, Atlanta, Nashville and Miami, among others, before officially wrapping up in December.

The string of live dates also marks the reunion and first tour from the hip-hop trio in years.

When Hill announced the tour, she reflected on the cultural impact of her 1998 album with a statement in a press release.

She said, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is and was a love song to my parents, my family, my people, my musical and cultural forebears, my teachers, my loves, my Creator. I wrote love songs and protest songs — (still love songs) about the subjects and interests that inspired and moved me. I was confident that what inspired me would resonate with an audience that had been led to believe that songs of that kind could only live in the past.”

Hill continued, “I loved music, I loved people, I truly felt grateful to God for my life, and genuinely blessed to have a platform where I could share wisdom and perspective through music. I felt a charge to challenge the idea that certain kinds of expression and/or certain kinds of people didn’t belong in certain places. I loved showing what could work or happen provided there was imagination, creativity and LOVE leading the way.”
