‘Mr. Robot’ Creator’s New Show Is Based On an Old Movie About a Robot

Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail’s new miniseries will be based on the 1927 dystopian Fritz Lang epic Metropolis. But why reboot a 90-year-old German movie now?

In Metropolis, industrialists control a vast city-state. Meanwhile, the working class toils underground in an industrial nightmare, just to keep the city alive. Star-crossed lovers from the two tribes have a Romeo and Juliet-style affair that flies in the face of Metropolis’s norms. Then a mad scientist replaces the girl with a robot — you know, as one does. The robot seduces the workingmen into all-out revolt.

Metropolis‘s class warfare and technological anxiety were as relevant in 1927 as they seem to be in the age of Bernie and Trump. But besides politics, Star Wars, The Terminator, Westworld, and countless other modern sci-fi staples have picked up what this masterpiece was layin’ down nearly a century ago.

After Game of Thrones, networks are looking for epic shows that can attract loyal fan bases for years to come. It all just goes to show, a movie as old as Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight can still have some fuel left in the tank.
