It's too bad they're all in different new movies because Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Evans and Ana de Armas vs. possessed Deadites would be pretty amazing.

But separately, not too shabby, either: This weekend, the newest installment of the "Evil Dead" franchise takes the horror from the cabin in the woods to a high-rise apartment, Phoenix stars in "Hereditary" director Ari Aster's latest, Gyllenhaal headlines a Guy Ritchie military thriller, while Evans and de Armas team up for a spy comedy.

Here's a guide to new movies that will satisfy every cinematic taste, plus some noteworthy theatrical films making their streaming and on-demand debuts:

If you dig a bloody twist on a cult horror classic: 'Evil Dead Rise'

Alyssa Sutherland (far right) stars as a mom whose strange behavior begins to worry her family (Gabrielle Echols, Nell Fisher, Lily Sullivan and Morgan Davies) in the horror film "Evil Dead Rise."

Get ready to never look at a cheese grater the same way again. The latest delightfully demented "Evil Dead" film centers on an LA family and teenage curiosity that unlocks the Book of the Dead and unleashes dark demonic forces once again. Alyssa Sutherland's possessed, tormenting mom is a phenomenally nasty piece of work and the jaw-droppingly gory, endlessly bloody finale is a joy to behold.

If you don't mind spending three hours in confusion: 'Beau Is Afraid'

On his way to bury his mom, Beau (Joaquin Phoenix) winds up convalescing in a teen girl's room in the dark comedy "Beau Is Afraid."

Aster doesn't miss when it comes to enjoyably batty and deranged narratives. Yet instead of his usual horror outing, this dark comedy just preys on one poor dude's anxieties and mother issues: Middle-aged Beau (Phoenix) learns his mom has died and takes one seriously weird trip home that puts his life and mental health in danger. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense but has more than a little relatable depth to it.

If you dig brothers-in-arms tales: 'Guy Ritchie's The Covenant'

Sgt. John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal, front) and his translator Ahmed (Dar Salim) have each other's backs in an Afghanistan firefight in Guy Ritchie's military thriller "The Covenant."
Sgt. John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal, front) and his translator Ahmed (Dar Salim) have each other's backs in an Afghanistan firefight in Guy Ritchie's military thriller "The Covenant."

Ritchie puts aside his usual snarky action-movie attitude for an earnest and intense military thriller, and it's actually his best film in a while. When a U.S. Army sergeant (Gyllenhaal) in Afghanistan is injured in a Taliban attack, his platoon's local translator (Dar Salim) drags him over miles of enemy terrain to get him back to base – a favor that later needs to be repaid by the military man when his savior needs him the most.

If you need a good history lesson: 'Chevalier'

Kelvin Harrison stars as French violinist and composer Joseph Bologne in the 18th-century musical biopic "Chevalier."

Those who adored "Amadeus" back in the day will live for this well-crafted classical music biopic about a relatively forgotten 18th-century Black composer/violin virtuoso. Kelvin Harrison Jr. is confident and charismatic as Joseph Bologne, a French musician who is pals with Marie Antoinette (Lucy Boynton) and gets a crack at leading the national opera but faces troubles because of his skin color and a coming revolution.

If you still love Ray Romano: 'Somewhere in Queens'

Leo (Ray Romano, left) and Angela (Laurie Metcalf) meet their son's new girlfriend in "Somewhere in Queens."
Leo (Ray Romano, left) and Angela (Laurie Metcalf) meet their son's new girlfriend in "Somewhere in Queens."

A warm and self-assured directorial debut from the former sitcom star, the dramedy centers on a blue-collar New York father (Romano) who proudly watches his son (Jacob Ward) play high school basketball. When young heartbreak threatens to derail a college hoops scholarship, the dad goes to desperate lengths to make sure the kid keeps his eye on the prize – and creates tension with his wife (Laurie Metcalf) and large family.

If you prefer Chris Evans dorky instead of macho: 'Ghosted'

CIA agent Sadie (Ana de Armas) and farmer Cole (Chris Evans) get caught up in international intrigue in the action romantic comedy "Ghosted."
CIA agent Sadie (Ana de Armas) and farmer Cole (Chris Evans) get caught up in international intrigue in the action romantic comedy "Ghosted."

A meet-cute over houseplants leads to a great date for farmer Cole (Evans) and the enigmatic Sadie (de Armas). When she doesn't respond to his texts, the needy dude tracks her to London and discovers she's an elite CIA agent. Ridiculous plot turns, A-list cameos and rom-com banter ensue as they take on international bad guys in a spy-film dud that spends more time on big action scenes than needed character development.

If you're a die-hard 'Super Troopers' fan: 'Quasi'

Steve Lemme stars as the hunchbacked Quasimodo in the comedy "Quasi."

The Broken Lizard comedy troupe pulled off a classic with the original 2001 "Troopers" but haven't hasn't found that same magic since. In this extremely loose interpretation of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," rubber-faced Steve Lemme is good enough for a few laughs as Quasimodo, a 15th-century working-class torturer who gets caught in a feud between the pope and the king of France and falls for the queen (Adrianne Palicki).

If you heart 1990s romantic comedies: 'A Tourist's Guide to Love'

After a sudden breakup, a travel executive (Rachael Leigh Cook) goes on assignment to learn about the Vietnamese tourist industry and finds adventure and romance with her expat tour guide (Scott Ly) in "A Tourist's Guide to Love."
After a sudden breakup, a travel executive (Rachael Leigh Cook) goes on assignment to learn about the Vietnamese tourist industry and finds adventure and romance with her expat tour guide (Scott Ly) in "A Tourist's Guide to Love."

"She's All That" queen Rachael Leigh Cook stars as a travel executive nursing a broken heart who ventures to Vietnam, going undercover to suss out a business opportunity, and falls for a good-hearted expat tour guide (Scott Ly) with a penchant for showing his guests the country's real culture. The leads have a nice chemistry, the scenery is cool, but the rom-com plot is formulaic to a painful fault.
