'Mountain Men' Harvest Organic Salt for Pork Because They're Fancy Too

On Mountain Men, Eustace and Preston were planning to visit their friend’s salt well and collect some for their latest “organic pork” moneymaking scheme. The boys traveled deep into the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina to gather the seasoning, hoping not to get shot.

The boys knew they had arrived as a shot rang out across the mountain range, and a gruff voice shouted, “Stop right there! Let me see your hands! Who are you? What do you want?!” It was their old friend Jim. He had fired the warning shot because he thought they were “revenuers.”

After Jim realized they were his friends, he led them to his salt well, which he claims has the same salinity of the Dead Sea. Jim added, “That salt’s so good, there’s a glazing ham up in Smithfield, Va., right now, one my great-great-granddaddy salted a hundred years ago you can still eat.”

Eustace and Preston boiled about 15 gallons of water to yield about 30 pounds of salt, which they took back to their “organic pig.”

Mountain Men airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on History Channel.
