A Florida brewery’s love for animals has caught national attention and has inspired support around helping four special dogs find their forever homes, as well as creating better facilities for other animals in shelters.

Motorworks Brewing in Bradenton, Fla. partnered with Shelter Manatee this month to create wraps for their award-winning beer, Cruiser Golden Lager. These wraps feature images of four adoptable dogs (Candy, Day Day, Morton and King), with proceeds going towards building a no-kill shelter for Manatee County Animal Services.

According to Motorworks sales and marketing director Barry Elwonger, it was only natural for the company to get involved in this effort.

“We've always been dog-friendly here,” Elwonger explained. “We've been doing a ‘Yappy Hour’ every third Sunday since we've been open six years ago.”

Along with “Yappy Hour” — which features on-site adoptions and dog-friendly obstacle courses in their large garden space — Motorworks has also donated to animal-related nonprofit organizations. At their Jan. 19 event, thanks to their popular new beer cans, they were able to raise money for their cause and even got two of the dogs, Morton and King, adopted.

This was the first time the brewery decided to put dogs on their beer cans; Elwonger noted that the dogs were chosen from a bunch of photographs, with breed being a big part of their decision-making process.

“Pit mixes make up a large populace of dogs that are in shelters, not just here, but across the nation,” he said. “They're very lovable dogs.”

With this recent fundraising and adoption effort bringing so much attention, Elwonger called the massive support “humbling.” Though the shelter has also been getting a lot of support, there are two more dogs, Candy and Day Day, who are still waiting on their forever homes and he reiterated how they would make great companions.

“Day Day, she is a [pit] mix and she is the sweetest thing you will ever meet,” he gushed. “Candy is the most attentive. She’s taking commands, very alert [and] friendly, and is a sweetheart as well.”

The beer is only available at the Motorworks tasting room and, according to Elwonger, are selling quickly. The brewery has made the commemorative wraps available online for those who want to support the project but don’t live in the area.
