Motorcycle rider dies in highway crash in Sarasota County, FHP says

A 66-year-old Venice man died in a motorcycle wreck on the highway in Sarasota County on Monday, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The crash happened at 11:33 a.m. in the southbound lanes of State Road 681, near the U.S. 41 overpass in the Nokomis area, troopers say.

The Venice man was riding his motorcycle south on S.R. 681 when he “failed to properly negotiate the curve within the roadway,” the news release said.

The motorcycle then hit the concrete guard rail along the interstate. The rider was thrown off of the bike and hit another guard rail on the west side of the roadway.

Sarasota County EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to traffic investigators.

All lanes of S.R. 681 remained closed near the U.S. 41 overpass shortly after 2 p.m. Monday as FHP’s homicide unit continued to investigate the crash.
