Manito motorcycle rider dead after Sunday collision in Pekin

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly named the victim of this Pekin accident. That name was intended for a different fatal accident in Tazewell County.

PEKIN – A Manito man riding a motorcycle was killed Sunday when his bike collided with a car in Pekin, police said.

The accident occurred at 12:24 p.m. at the intersection of Towerline Road and Veterans Drive, said Pekin police spokeswoman Billie J. Ingles in a news release.

Dennis D. Hilst, 67, was killed, said Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood. An autopsy indicated he suffered blunt force trauma injuries due to the collision, Harwood said. Hilst was reportedly not wearing a helmet, the coroner said. Toxicology lab results are pending.

Ingles said the motorcycle was traveling north on Veterans and the car had turned onto Veterans by making a left turn from Towerline Road.

The two collided and the motorcycle rider was thrown from the bike. He was taken by helicopter to OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:47 p.m.

The car's driver was taken to the hospital as well, but that person wasn't injured, Ingles said in the release.

Troopers with the Illinois State Police responded to process the scene and Veterans Drive was shut down from 14th Street to Mall Road while they did their investigation on Sunday.

The investigation is ongoing and no additional information is available, Ingles said.
