Mother's Brewing Company opened a coffee shop. Here's what to know

Mother's Brewing Company is entering the local coffee shop game with the addition of The Cufflink Room. The Springfield News-Leader sat down with Jeff Seifried, who took over the brewery in May 2023 with his wife, Lindsay, to talk about the new spot. The Cufflink Room, 215 S. Grant Ave., is open from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.

Why attach a coffee shop to a brewery?

The shop gives the Seifrieds the opportunity to expand their hours of operation as a space that's not driven by alcohol and to add to the brewery's presence on Grant Avenue.

"So many people drive by each day and think we're just a manufacturer," Seifried said. "They don't know we have two acres in the back yard with a playground and firepits."

The Cufflink Room offers an experience different than the brewery or tasting room.

"For us, this is an extension of Mother's. This allows people to experience Mother's in a way they haven't before," Seifried said.

What will it offer?

The Cufflink Room will use beans sourced from Coffee Ethic and Mudhouse in its drinks, which will include classics like lattes, cappuccinos and Americanos. Guests can also anticipate a signature drink, which is still in the works, Seifried said.

"We have a coffee team — the brewers are part of the coffee team — so they have a lot of experience working with coffee on the beer side," Seifried said. "So, I would expect similar processes that we use in Winter Grind to be used in cold brew. I think there's a lot of interesting things that will happen here."

People can also stop by The Cufflink Room to pick up packaged beer before the brewery side opens.

As for food, the shop's specialty will be a "Nuss-Schokoladenwaffeln," which is a warm waffle with chocolate on top. The choice of the German treat is a nod to the employees at Mother's.

"We just have an amazing, eclectic group of people. And the one thing that is consistently weaved throughout several of those team members is that they speak German. As we looked to offerings, the Nuss-Schokoladenwaffeln kind of came to light," Seifried said. "It was something that speaks to us as a brewery and who we are. And it's just damn good."

Why is it called "The Cufflink Room?"

The name is a nod to a couple of things, most notably Mother's Brewing Company founder Jeff Schrag.

Schrag also runs the top cufflink dealer in America, called Pioneer Formal Accessories. Before the Seifrieds took over, the space that is now the Cufflink Room was used as storage for — you guessed it — cufflinks.

"It pays respect to how we got here ..." Seifried said. "And it speaks to our other business we own, Blackwell's Men's Clothing Store, so dress clothes, cufflinks. It all worked."

The name also allows the space to shift and grow as needed without being pigeonholed. The space is available for rental, along with the Barrel House next door.

"The room might evolve. We might have, I don't know, a dance night in The Cufflink Room," Seifried said.
