Before there was a Teen Mom franchise, there was 16 and Pregnant, originally a 6 episode docu-series.

The President of Programming at MTV at the time, Tony DiSanto, said, "This is the real secret life of the American teenager." The show became massively popular, and was the second-most streamed MTV show online.

Due to its popularity, spin-off Teen Mom premiered on December 8, 2009 with Amber Portwood, Maci Bookhouse, Catelynn Lowell and Farrah Abraham. The show, and it's many other spin-offs has become a phenomenon, catapulting its cast to fame and fortune.

But, often with stardom comes scandal and controversy.

Below, are the most scandalous cast members from the franchise.

Amber Portwood

Perhaps one of the most outspoken members of the Teen Mom cast, Amber Portwood has been involved in some of the most scandalous moments on the show, even ending up in prison at one point.

She and Gary Shirley welcomed daughter Leah on November 12, 2008, however, things were anything but happy between the two, and their many fights and screaming matches were captured by MTV cameras.

In June 2011, Amber pleaded guilty to domestic battery, and a search of her house in which drugs were found lead to another guilty plea in January 2012.

She later dropped out of rehab and went to prison. In a letter she wrote in jail that was read during the Teen Mom reunion, she said, "It was time for me to stop partying and realize that even though I'm 21, I'm not a normal 21-year-old—I'm a mother. Which means I have to grow up quicker and start acting like a mother."

Of course, this was just the beginning and the reality star has seen multiple boyfriends, engagements, and babies since then, while still continuing to let her opinions be known on social media.

Farrah Abraham

Farrah gave birth to daughter Sophia on February 23, 2009 and unfortunately found herself a single mother when Sophia's father Derek Underwood was killed in a car accident two months before the baby was born.

Farrah has changed quite a bit since those early days on Teen Mom, having made a porn video, gotten massive amounts of plastic surgery, and started arguments with other cast members from the show.

In 2017, Farrah left Teen Mom O.G. and sued MTV claiming they fired her for continuing to pursue a career in porn.

Jenelle Evans

With all the drama Jenelle Evans has been involved in, you could write an entire book full of the arguments, drug problems, multiple boyfriends and children, and problems with the law.

And, the reality star actually did write her own book entitled, Read Between The Lines: From the Diary Of A Teenage Mom, in which she described her addiction to heroin.

Throughout the series, the star has had multiple relationships that have proved to be quite volatile, with her most recent being her marriage to David Eason.

However, her husband was kicked off the show for making homophobic comments online, and it appears the two are now separated.

Leah Messer

During season 1 of the series, Leah married the father of her twins, Corey Simms. However, their marriage ended when Leah confessed she had cheated on him with an ex-boyfriend right before their wedding.

She later went through major drug problems, even appearing to nod off while holding her niece in one of the most shocking moments of the series.

The reality star later went to rehab and went through another break up with the father or her third daughter Jeremy Calvert.

She seems to be doing better these days, despite breaking up with her most recent boyfriend Jason Jordan.

Unsurprisingly, it's one of the most dramatic shows on MTV, what will the next few seasons bring from the Teen Mom franchise?
