CBS has backed a new drama series starring Morris Chestnut for the 2024-2025 broadcast season.

Watson is a “medical drama inspired by the characters from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes mysteries,” according to Deadline.

“We are thrilled to feature such a beloved character from the world of Sherlock Holmes at the center of this series and have it brought to life by Morris Chestnut in a fresh and unexpected take on the immortal doctor,” said Amy Reisenbach, President, CBS Entertainment in a statement. “Craig Sweeny’s bold new vision for the complex Dr. Watson deftly interweaves rich character storytelling with edge-of-your-seat medical mysteries.”

Watson lives in the cinematic universe where Sherlock Holmes has been killed off. A year after his death, Dr. John Watson (Chestnut) resumes his practice as the head of a clinic that treats rare disorders. However, his old life as Holmes’ partner now intersects with his present one in the riveting series.

Craig Sweeny, who spent five years as a writer and executive producer of Elementary Watson‘s predecessor — will serve as showrunner on the new series. Larry Teng will direct the pilot, written by Sweeny.

This also marks Chestnut’s return to the medical field after portraying doctors on Fox’s The Resident and Showtime’s Nurse Jackie. He also played a pathologist on Fox’s Rosewood.

Additionally, the Our Kind Of People star is developing a new Netflix film, in which he’s producing and starring in. He was also cast as a series regular on season two of Reasonable Doubt.

CBS has not revealed the premiere date for Watson.
