Laura Peterson knows a thing or two about being in the headlines on “The Morning Show,” and the woman who plays her, Julianna Margulies, will definitely make some headlines if she scoops up drama actress and drama ensemble Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for the Apple TV+ drama in January.

These two bids would bring Margulies’ overall nomination count to a whopping 22 and tie it with Edie Falco‘s all-time record. With 20 career noms to date — of which she racked up a total of nine in drama actress for “ER” and “The Good Wife” and 11 in drama ensemble for those two series plus “The Morning Show” — Margulies is currently tied with Alec Baldwin in third place on the all-time list, trailing also 21-time nominee Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

At the moment, Margulies is expected to nab only one nomination for “The Morning Show” this year — namely, drama ensemble. The show is in fourth place in our combined ensemble odds, behind 2022 victor “Succession,” “The Last of Us” and two-time champ “The Crown,” and ahead of “Yellowjackets.” Outside of the two previous winners, “The Morning Show” is probably the next safest bet for a nomination, as it’s not just a former nominee in the category but also an indisputable SAG-AFTRA fave. In addition to an ensemble bid for its second season, the topical drama has raked in six individual citations for its actors and a victory for Jennifer Aniston. It doesn’t hurt that its third season — which premiered with two episodes on Sept. 13 and concludes its 10-episode run on Nov. 8 — is the biggest showcase yet for its ensemble and will be fresh in voters’ minds when voting begins on Dec. 4.

Landing the solo bid will certainly be a much taller order for Margulies, who is in 24th place in our drama actress odds. She already missed for the second season, in which she had more screen time and, arguably, more material than she’s heretofore had in the third, and also has the disadvantage of being a supporting player up against a host of leads (remember: the SAG Awards combine lead and supporting turns into one category on the TV side). Those include her co-stars Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, both of whom were shortlisted for Season 2 and are currently in our top 10 — Aniston is in third place while Witherspoon is in ninth. Not just that, but Margulies also faces internal competition from other supporting actresses on the show, including Karen Pittman, Greta Lee and Season 3 addition Nicole Beharie.

That said, a peek at Margulies’ résumé should be enough to remind you that she, aka the former queen of the SAG Awards, is never to be counted out. Not only is she among the most nominated people in the awards’ 29-year history, but she, an eight-time winner — four in drama actress (two each for “ER” and “The Good Wife”) and four in drama ensemble for “ER” — is also just one triumph shy of tying Louis-Dreyfus for the most victories. While her track record didn’t secure her the nomination for Season 2, bear in mind that the SAG Awards annually use a rotating nominating committee of roughly 2,500 guild members who have not served for at least eight years. That’s to say, it’s a completely different group of people choosing the nominees this year, and it’s entirely possible that they’re much higher on Margulies’ “Morning Show” performance than the committee members from two years ago were.

So while earning both nominations will no doubt be an uphill climb for Margulies, you definitely shouldn’t be surprised if she pulls it off and makes the headlines for becoming co-anchor of the SAG Awards in January.
