In the eight years since “Mad Men” aired its final episode and Jon Hamm was awarded his only Primetime Emmy as the series’ star, the actor has gone unnoticed by the TV academy despite having frequently flexed both his dramatic and comedic performing skills on more than two dozen programs. Given the 12-time acting nominee’s level of productivity, there is practically no way this drought will last forever, especially considering the banner year he is about to have. Before starting his stint as a fifth season regular on the FX anthology series “Fargo,” Hamm will play a supporting role on Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” that could end up putting him in the Emmys record book.

Hamm has joined the star-studded cast of “The Morning Show” for its third season, which is set to begin streaming in mid-September. Not much is yet known about his new character, Paul Marks, but the season’s official trailer indicates that he is an opportunistic tech billionaire who offers to bail out the UBA network after a massive cyber attack brings it to the brink of financial ruin. He also appears to take a romantic interest in on-air personality Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston), who is affected by the data breach more than almost anyone else.

Given the fact that seven different actors have already received Emmy nominations for their work on “The Morning Show,” Hamm could easily find his way into the next Best Drama Supporting Actor lineup and even emulate 2020 champ Billy Crudup by taking the prize for this specific program. One thing working in his favor is that eight drama series have already produced multiple supporting male Emmy victors, with the last case having involved John Lithgow (2017) and Tobias Menzies (2021) of “The Crown.”

If he does succeed on this potential outing, Hamm will make history as the first man to ever conquer both the drama lead and supporting Emmy categories. Before he finally clinched the 2015 Best Drama Actor trophy on his eighth consecutive try, “Mad Men” held the record for most acting Emmy losses and no wins, with 34 bids divided among 13 performers. In this case, of course, he would not be under the pressure of ending such an unfortunate streak, which Crudup immediately kept from starting.

Aside from sharing in the last four Best Drama Series nominations “Mad Men” received from 2012 to 2015, Hamm has picked up four comedic acting notices for his guest appearances on “30 Rock” (2009-2010, 2012) and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” (2015). Since being bested by Bradley Whitford (“Transparent”) on that last bid, he has shown up on such acclaimed series as “Barry” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and even lent his voice to various animated programs, including “Big Mouth,” “Bless the Harts” and “Invincible.”

The third season of Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” will have its two-episode premiere on September 13, with one new installment set to stream each Wednesday until November 8.
