MUSIC QUIETLY VITAL AT APPLE: Although it was barely mentioned during Apple’s fiscal Q4 earnings call Thursday, music is still playing an important role in Apple’s strategies. The company said it was “looking forward to launching” a redesigned iTunes slated for this month while the iTunes store generated almost $2.1 billion in revenue. There was no mention of Apple’s upcoming Internet radio service, but reports notably surfaced on the same day saying label negotiations will be finalized later this year. |

ROLLING STONES PLAY $19.34 PARIS GIG: The Rolling Stones played to 350 fans at Paris’ La Trabendo club in Paris last night. Their first concert since 2007 came ahead of their 50th anniversary shows in London and New Jersey. Playing for almost an hour and a half, the band did hits like “It’s Only Rock and Roll” and “Brown Sugar.” ” I can’t believe we’re all still standing up,” joked Mick Jagger. “You’d think by now one or two of us would be sitting down, but we’re not.” Tickets cost £12 (about $19.34), tickets for their London’s O2 Arena in November could set you back £406 ($654).

SAMSUNG’S Q3 PROFIT JUMPS 91 PERCENT: Samsung’s Q3 profit jumped 91 percent in a period when it was the only big manufacturer with new phones at the high end of the market. But the company indicated momentum may stall this quarter. The company’s telecom unit produced an operating profit margin of 18.8 percent in the three months through September. Samsung released its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III, in May.

SERGIO DALMA, LILA DOWNS, 3BALLMTY TO PERFORM AT LATIN GRAMMY AWARDS: The initial slate of Latin Grammy Award performers were announced yesterday and are as follows: nominees Sergio Dalma, Lila Downs (with Toto La Momposina and Celso Pina), Jesse & Joy, Victor Manuelle, Gerardo Ortiz, Pitbull, Michel Telo, and 3BallMTY are the first performers announced for the XIII Annual Latin Grammy Awards. Actors Cristian De La Fuente and Lucero will again co-host the event set for Nov. 15 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas which will air live on Univision.

BERTELSMANN SEES EXPANSION, GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES IN CHINA: German media giant Bertelsmann is boosting its presence in China with investments in local media firms and licensing and production deals, such as Chinese versions of “X Factor” and “Got Talent.” Bertelsmann, which co-owns BMG Rights Management with KKR, flew more than a hundred of its top executives to Beijing on Friday for the company’s first- China Conference, highlighting the importance that CEO Thomas Rabe has put on the group’s strategic shift from West to East. The company is reportedly in the midst of bidding for Universal Music’s divested EMI assets.

LIL WAYNE FALLS ILL, FORCES PLANE TO LAND: Rapper Lil Wayne was hospitalized after reportedly suffering seizure-like symptoms during a flight on Thursday. The hip-hop star fell suddenly ill while travelling in his private jet, prompting the pilot to make an emergency landing in Texas. He was taken to a hospital and discharged around 6 pm local time and is now said to be “doing better.”
