Morning after bowl loss, SMU DC tweets story about coaches taking entire staffs to new job

Wednesday night’s Frisco Bowl was a disaster for SMU.

The Mustangs fell behind 42-3 in the first half thanks to a bunch of turnovers and ended up losing 51-10 to Louisiana Tech. SMU turned the ball over six times in what was new coach Sonny Dykes’ first game with the program.

Dykes was hired as SMU’s new coach after Chad Morris left for Arkansas. Morris took some members of his staff to Arkansas with him, but not everyone. Defensive coordinator Van Malone and remaining assistants helped coach the bowl game.

This is just a guess, but Morris not taking his entire staff to Arkansas may not have gone over too well. Thursday morning, Malone tweeted the following link:

Nebraska coach Scott Frost is taking his entire Central Florida staff with him to the Huskers. Wednesday, Frost said it was the “right thing” to give all of his assistants a chance to come to Nebraska after helping UCF go from a winless program to an undefeated one.

SMU didn’t have that big of a turnaround, but it was still a remarkable one under Morris. The program was one of the worst in college football after June Jones’ departure and SMU ended up 7-5 entering Wednesday night.

So we can understand why Malone could agree with Frost. Especially after Wednesday’s results of a patchwork bowl preparation effort.
