Morena Baccarin Reflects on Her Career, Joy with Ben McKenzie and Drama with Her Ex: 'I'm Right Where I Should Be' and My Son 'Will Know What's True'

It'll be any day now for Morena Baccarin!

"I'm one million years pregnant!" the Gotham star, 36, tells PEOPLE in this week's issue of eagerly anticipating the arrival of her baby with boyfriend and costar Ben McKenzie.

"I'm feeling good, and I'm now at the point where I can chill out a bit," she says.

Though, the Brazilian-American actress, who's also mom to 2-year-old son Julius with her estranged husband Austin Chick, admits that's easier said than done. "With a toddler, chilling out is hard to do," she says. But finally, "I'm nesting."

It's much-needed down time, after months of filming new episodes of Gotham (which made its midseason return on Fox last week) while pregnant and going on an international promotion tour for Deadpool, in which she played Ryan Reynolds' girlfriend. "It was definitely tiring, but I love my job," says Baccarin, who enjoyed having McKenzie, 37, around to care for her. "I'm right where I should be. And I think it's important for my son to see his mom happy and enjoying her work."

But as the actress focuses on her career and new beginnings, she's also embroiled in a messy, bicoastal custody battle with Chick, who filed for divorce last July.

While Baccarin was awarded primary custody of Julius, allowing him to move to New York City where she and McKenzie film Gotham, she was also ordered to pay Chick $23,000 a month in spousal support.

In February, the actress filed papers stating her doctors have advised bed rest, asking to postpone deposition hearings in Los Angeles. As for her personal life playing out on the public stage, "I understand people are curious, but it doesn't matter," says the actress. "My personal life is my personal life. All I think about is my son, my family and my future family."

When it comes to shielding son Julius, "He's going to be of an age where he can go online and look at everything that's been said and done. What I say is the only thing I can control," says Baccarin.

She adds, "I just want him to know that he's loved and there's the story that people tell and the story that mom tells, and he'll know what's true. That's all that matters."
