The Latin music industry has seen massive growth over the last year. In 2022, revenue for these genres exceeded $1 billion for the first time, and it’s continued outpacing other parts of the industry. And Latin music has remained a force on streaming — so much that 2023 seems to be the biggest year for number one Latin hits on Spotify.

Eight songs made the number one spot on the platform’s global charts, the most in Spotify history. Of the 10 most-streamed artists globally, four were Latino. Bad Bunny occupied the highest spot at number two, outranked only outranked by Taylor Swift after leading the list of most-streamed stars for three consecutive years. Still, he continued his dominance on the platform: Un Verano Sin Ti was the top album of 2023, despite coming out in 2022.

It was also a banner year for música Mexicana, a movement that exploded into the zeitgeist like never before, with “Ella Baila Sola” by Peso Pluma earning a top spot in the most-streamed songs globally chart.

More from Rolling Stone

Here are some more takeaways from Latin music’s biggest year on Spotify:

Almost Half of the Top 10 Artists Were Latino

Despite Taylor Swift taking the No. 1 slot over Bad Bunny for the first time after three consecutive years, four of the Top 10 artists on the platform were Latino. Peso Pluma landed at No. 5, Feid — thanks to albums Feliz Cumpeaños Ferxxo and Mor, No Le Temas a la Oscuridad — followed at No. 6, while Karol G came at No. 9, after releasing her Mañana Será Bonito and Mañana Será Bonito: Bichota Season LPs. . La Bichota even out-streamed Lana Del Rey, who landed No. 10 on the list. – T.M.

Three Songs By Música Mexicana Artists Were Number One Global Hits

The big story for 2023 was the commercial and cultural success of música Mexicana, which has grown 216 percent globally on Spotify since 2019. And in 2023, mega-hits by some of the genre’s breakthrough artists hit the number one spot on the platform’s global charts: “Ella Baila Sola” by Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma, “un x100to” by Grupo Frontera and Bad Bunny, and “Peso Pluma: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 55” by Bizarrap and Peso Pluma all became smash juggernauts that outstreamed everything else out there. – J.L.

The Peso Effect

Five música Mexicana artists made it to Spotify’s Top 50 global artists. Leading the charge is Peso Pluma, who finished the list at number five with a cool 9 billion streams this year alone. His album Génesis was also the most-streamed album in the genre this year, racking up almost 3 billion streams.

His fellow música Mexicana peers weren’t far behind. Rising star Junior H was the second most-streamed artist in the genre, followed by Natanael Cano, Fuerza Regida, and Grupo Frontera. Eslabon Armado and Natanael Cano also saw their projects make strides; Eslabon’s Desvelado and Nata’s Nata Montana were the most streamed albums after Génesis. – J.L.

Still on ‘Un Verano Sin Ti’

Bad Bunny’s 2022 LP Un Verano Sin Ti was the No. 1 album in the world on Spotify in 2022 — and also 2023. Globally, Verano Sin Ti earned more than 4.5 billion streams this year, despite being released more than a year ago.

On the Top 10 list of most-streamed LPs worldwide, Karol G’s Mañana Será Bonito landed at No. 5, while Peso Pluma’s breakthrough record Génesis earned him a slot at No. 9. – T.M.
