It’s been 48 and a half years since Monty Python’s landmark film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, first hit theaters, which means that it’s the perfect time to celebrate the film’s legacy, according to Monty Python at least. On Tuesday, it was announced that the film will return to theaters this December via Iconic Events Releasing and Mercury Studios.

Over 500 movie theaters across the United States will participate in the screenings, which will begin on Sunday, December 3rd, with “encore screenings” beginning on Wednesday, December 6th. Additionally, two versions of the film will be shown: the standard cut, and a brand-new “Quote-a-long” rendition, which will display the lines on the screen so that fans can “quote, laugh, and sing-a-long like never before.” Tickets for the event are on-sale now, and can be purchased here.

The announcement arrives with a new trailer for the film, advertising that it’s “back in cinemas for the first time since the last time,” and previewing some of its most iconic lines. Watch the trailer below.

Reflecting on the legacy of the film, the surviving members of Monty Python offered some insight as to why they believe it’s remained such a beloved fixture of comedic cinema. “Grail is a bit like A Hard Day’s Night,” Eric Idle explained in a press statement, referencing The Beatles’ 1964 film. “It’s got this energy, this ‘Let’s just make it up, let’s just do it.’ It’s got a joie de vivre that’s very infectious, it’s very hard not to like.”

Michael Palin, meanwhile, expressed amazement at how wide the reach of the film became after its release. “In the declining years of his life, Elvis himself watched [the film],” he said. “That just blew my mind!”

Meanwhile, the stage adaptation of The Holy Grail, the 2004 musical, Spamalot, is set to return to Broadway for the first time in 14 years later this month, premiering on October 31st. The show will officially open on November 16th. For more details, read Consequence’s guide on attending the revival production, and grab your tickets here.
