Montreal mayor Valérie Plante is sharing an update on her health after she fell ill and collapsed at a news conference on Tuesday morning.

Plante, 49, was at a lectern answering a reporter's question at the weekly press briefly in a municipal building when she abruptly went silent mid-sentence, according to a video of the incident shared by CTV News.

"Oh no, I feel unwell," she could be heard saying in French before turning and slumping to the floor. Plante's aides rushed to assist her and about five minutes later, she stood back up and was helped to her office.

An ambulance arrived to transport Plante to a hospital, but she declined and the ambulance left without her onboard, according to the Montreal Gazette.

Shortly after the incident took place, Plante's team provided a brief update on the politician's condition via Plante's X (formerly Twitter) account. "The mayor of Montreal suffered discomfort during a press conference and, fortunately, she is out of danger," the post read in French. "She will receive all the required medical support and thanks you for your support."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau commented on the post, sending his well-wishes to Plante. "Thinking of you, Valérie. Speedy recovery," he wrote. Quebec Premier François Legault also commented, "Glad you're doing well. Speedy recovery!"

In a post on X later on Tuesday, Plante — who in 2017 became the first woman to lead the Quebec city in its 375-year history — said she was "doing well" after her health scare.

"This morning, I felt unwell during a press conference. Fortunately, I'm better. Thank you very much for your kind words and support," she wrote in French.

"I was able to meet with a medical team and I am doing well," she continued. "However, as a preventive measure and to fully get back into shape, I will have to reduce the pace of my activities in the coming days."

Plante also noted that she would be absent from a council meeting set to take place that evening.

"I want to thank you very much for your support. I feel blessed to be so well surrounded. It warms my heart," she concluded her message.

Plante was reelected to her mayoral seat in 2021 after a decisive victory against Denis Coderre.
