“I was already into monsters, ever since I was in the crib,” Guillermo del Toro once told the Hollywood Reporter. Indeed, he was just 6 when he watched his first monster movie, Frankenstein, from 1931. One of his first toys was a plush werewolf he stitched together with help from his aunt.

The Mexican filmmaker has won a whopping 87 awards. “I’ve been doing this for 25 years. … The movies I’ve made are movies that I feel I need to make,” he said of The Shape of Water, which won him both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe in 2018. He became the third of the so-called Three Amigos to accomplish the feat, following his close friends and fellow Mexican directors Alfonso Cuarón, who won the Oscar in 2014 for Gravity, and Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, who took home top honors in 2015 for Birdman, and for The Revenant a year later.

Del Toro has written, produced, and directed more than 16 films, including Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy. “All my movies are strangely autobiographical,” he said.

His next project? Surprisingly, it’s a musical — and for del Toro a childhood dream come true. Netflix has hired him to write, produce, and direct his first animated film, a new version of Pinocchio. “No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation, and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio. I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember,” he said in a statement.
