Monroe woman makes acting debut in ‘I Heard You Buy Souls’

Celebrating the spooky season for actress Valirie Dickens includes acting in Daniel McCurry’s film, “I Heard You Buy Souls.”

The 22-year-old Monroe resident plays a demon named “Rebellion” on a search for purpose while she and a human travel through heaven and hell.

“The movie is what I have been considering an inspirational horror,” Daniel McCurry said in an email. “Many of the elements in the film are horrific yet it’s all part of the journey of finding purpose.”

The independent film is McCurry’s first. He is the writer, director and producer.

“At the moment, I have pitched to the Sundance and other film festivals,” he said. “I am waiting to hear back. After that, I am seeking distribution and it will land on a streaming service most likely next year.”

As a first-time actress, McCurry described Dickens as easy going and courageous.

“We shot in some very unsavory locations because she plays a demon named Rebellion so the horror scenes have to feel horrifying and chaotic,” he said. “She shot some scenes in a 1950s abandoned aquarium in Cleveland, Ohio. She did it with no hesitation. She definitely doesn’t let fear stop her. My production team was terrified.

“She’s also very nice and peaceful in person which made the character she portrayed more intriguing because you have a demon who the viewers know and the characters know she doesn’t fit in down there. It adds elements to the story tremendously.”

“I’ve been acting about six years,” Valirie Dickens said. “I started out modeling and I picked up a few acting gigs here and there.”

Dickens received an invitation from McCurry to audition for the role and later met with him in Ohio to finalize the details.

“The character I play is a rebel. She doesn’t play by the rules,” Dickens said. “That personality kind of fits me.”

Getting the opportunity to act in a horror film combined with comedy appealed to Dickens.

“I really like horror films and I’m excited to see this film because it has horror, comedy and drama all in one.”
