Peacock has unveiled the official trailer for Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.
Featuring Tony Shalhoub reprising the titular role, Mr. Monk’s Last Case will follow the famed detective as he returns for “one last, very personal case,” involving his soon-to-be-married stepdaughter, Molly.
The new trailer opens with a classic moment of endearingly-awkward Monk-ness, as he attempts to be humble after receiving a compliment for his prolific mystery-solving record by saying “I couldn’t have done it alone.” Then, after a few seconds, his commitment to the truth wins out, and he makes the correction: “I could have, but it would’ve taken longer.”
From there, the trailer shows how Monk has adapted to overcome the challenges of the past few years, including the COVID-19 pandemic, which surely caused much distress to the germ-avoiding detective. Watch the trailer below.
Shalhoub will be joined by other series regulars, including Ted Levine, Traylor Howard, Jason Gray-Stanford, Melora Hardin, and Hector Elizondo. New characters will be portrayed by Caitlin McGee and James Purefoy. The 90-minute flick is set to premiere on Peacock on December 8th.
In a new statement, the film’s director, Randy Zisk, executive producer, David Hoberman, and series creator, Andy Breckman, expressed their excitement to return to the world of Monk.
“It’s been nearly fourteen years since the world has seen a fresh installment of Monk,” the statement read. “The world has changed mightily in those intervening years and Monk 2023 reflects the changing world. We’re so delighted to have made a movie version of Monk, and we are thrilled that every one of our stars were so enthusiastic about coming back. But in coming back, we wanted to do a film that was worthy of our legacy. Mr. Monk’s Last Case is a story that is powerful, emotional, funny, heartwarming, and has something to say about the human condition. And it will be both familiar and surprising.”
Before the film premieres next month, be sure to check out the 10 episodes that the show’s producers say you need to watch.
