The British Royal Family, with its centuries-long history, has seen its fair share of ups and downs. But even amidst the regal drama, some relationships stand out. One such bond is between Meghan Markle and King Charles III. Despite the bumps along the way (to put it politely), their rare shared moments of warmth and unity have left a lasting impression. Now, as the world grapples with the news of the King’s cancer diagnosis, one of these moments is making waves on the internet, touching hearts all over again.

Let’s take a moment to look back. When Markle, an American actress with a biracial heritage, stepped into the royal family, she was seen as a refreshing change in the traditional monarchy. Markle’s relationship with Prince Harry was groundbreaking, but it was her complex connection with her future father-in-law, King Charles, that really stirred interest.

Their relationship has been far from smooth sailing. Meghan and Harry’s decision to step back from their royal duties brought tensions to the surface. Accusations of racism within the royal family were made public, rocking the monarchy to its core.

Commonwealth Day has a special significance this year, as 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the modern Commonwealth, with old ties and new links enabling cooperation towards social, political and economic development which is both inclusive and sustainable. The Commonwealth represents a global network of 53 countries and almost 2.4 billion people, a third of the world’s population, of whom 60 percent are under 30 years old.
Each year the Commonwealth adopts a theme upon which the Service is based. This year’s theme ‘A Connected Commonwealth’ speaks of the practical value and global engagement made possible as a result of cooperation between the culturally diverse and widely dispersed family of nations, who work together in friendship and goodwill.
The Commonwealth’s governments, institutions and people connect at many levels, including through parliaments and universities. They work together to protect the natural environment and the ocean which connects many Commonwealth nations, shore to shore. Cooperation on trade encourages inclusive economic empowerment for all people - particularly women, youth and marginalised communities. The Commonwealth’s friendly sporting rivalry encourages people to participate in sport for development and peace.

Markle, at one point, even wrote a letter to King Charles expressing her private concerns about unconscious bias within the royal family. The harm caused by these allegations was immense, causing a rift within the family and damaging the royal image. King Charles, in particular, expressed his disappointment over the racism claims made by his daughter-in-law. Things between the royal family and Prince Harry and Markle have only seemed to get more tense since they left their royal positions in 2020.

Despite this turmoil, there were moments of unity and compassion. Like on Meghan’s wedding day, when Charles stepped in to walk her down the aisle in the absence of her father. Amid adversity, it was a symbol of family unity — one that TikTok users have revisited while looking through the new lens of King Charles’ cancer diagnosis.

“I always love that he did that for her,” commented one user on a TikTok featuring footage of the King walking Markle down the aisle in 2018. “It just occurred to me that this was his chance to do that because he has no daughters. I’m sure it meant a lot to King Charles to do that,” added another viewer.

Prince Harry has rushed back to the UK to be with his father, while Markle remains in California with their kids. This memory serves as a reminder of their shared history. A reminder that they are still tied together by family, no matter the distance or differences.

As the world sends their well-wishes to King Charles, this viral moment is a reminder that even in the most complicated of relationships, there is room for empathy.
