New Mom Troian Bellisario Reveals Why She Was Initially 'Worried' About Having a Daughter

When Troian Bellisario found out she was expecting a baby girl, no one was quite as surprised as the former Pretty Little Liars star.

“When we found out we were having a girl, I was floored, I was shocked,” Bellisario, who gave birth to a daughter back in October, told fellow actress Katie Lowes on Monday’s episode of her podcast, Katie’s Crib. “Of course I was worried.”

Bellisario added that her past was one of the biggest reasons she had concerns about having a daughter.

“I was thinking about my relationship with my mother. I was thinking about my history with my eating disorder. This is horrifying,” she said.

Exactly 1 year ago today I was just getting over food poisoning and wonder what the hell I was gonna do with myself in 2018. Here I am today, sick again, (Classic) but holding my first born daughter. I guess 2018 had its own plans for me. This was by far the most surprising, challenging, heart breaking and heart bursting year I have ever experienced. I am so grateful and humbled by it. The actress admitted to the podcast host that she didn’t know if she could “mentally” be ready for the job. “I didn’t grow up with girls,” she said. “It was such a foreign, alien landscape to me.”

Despite this, the 33-year-old found comfort and support in a specific group of people to prepare for motherhood.

“Thankfully, I had a really wonderful group of women around me. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become better friends with women,” she explained.

Bellisario is married to Suits actor Patrick J. Adams. Despite the couple’s initial fears of parenthood, those concerns all but vanished once their child arrived and she felt an “instant connection” to their daughter.

“Immediately, I just didn’t want to be apart from her,” the new mom said. “I couldn’t stop staring at her. I felt immediate love, responsibility, admiration for her. She was awesome.”

When asked by Lowes if she had any advice for any moms dealing with identity problems, Bellisario called for all of them to “go easy on yourself.”

“Know that it is going to be constantly changing. Know your limits,” she said. “I am constantly learning my limits.”
