Mom goes viral for mistake during daughter's engagement: 'I wouldn't change any of it'

A New Mexico woman is going viral after her attempt to film her daughter's engagement went hilariously wrong.

Benjamin Steele Bacon was planning to propose to his girlfriend of three years, Amber Griego, when he asked her mother, Susan, if she'd like to participate in the engagement, KOB-TV reports. Bacon had decided to pop the question near the penguin exhibit at the Albuquerque Biopark zoo, and asked his soon-to-be mother-in-law if she'd film the big moment.

But there was just one problem: As Bacon prepared to propose, Susan Griego aimed a phone camera at her daughter's reaction. Except, the camera was facing the wrong way. It turned out Susan had actually just recorded a video of her own face, struggling with the device as the big moment passed by.

"My camera phone wasn't working well enough so I said ‘Let me have your phone Amber and I'll take some film,'" Susan said. “I couldn't figure out how to work it and I'm taking a selfie of myself and I realize I'm filming myself instead of them and I'm laughing and we're all laughing."

"I guess I'm not very good at photography," Susan added.

The mistake may have cost the family a few memorable photos and videos, but Bacon said he was happy with the way things turned out.

"It was a perfect moment, I wouldn't change any of it. We have had a good laugh at the failed video, and will never forget the moment now," he told KOB-TV.

Amber, for her part, said the mix-up felt true-to-form and seemed to fit the dynamic she has with her now-fiancé.

"People have asked about it. I feel like that's kind of our relationship. Something wacky and random," Amber told KOB-TV KOB. "It's the perfect start to this."

Many social media users also seemed supportive, expressing how relatable and charming the situation felt.

"This is extremely my mother," one Twitter user wrote.

"Albuquerque woman is a great mom, but not such a good photographer," another added.
