Mom Found Dead After Police Uncover Alleged Plot to Murder Husband with Daughter

An Indiana woman was arrested after police uncovered a text exchange between herself and her mother they say are about an alleged plot to kill her mother's husband

An Indiana woman was arrested this week after police uncovered a text exchange between herself and her mother which they say is about an alleged plot to kill her mother's husband.

Ashley Jones, 29, was arrested on charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, and burglary, after allegedly confessing to "ordering ethylene glycol off the Internet" in the alleged murder plot of her mother's husband Harold Allen, Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer shared in a Facebook release.

On Tuesday, Jones claimed that her mother, Marsha Allen, "was the person who had placed the ethylene glycol in Harold’s drink" in December 2022, per the release.

Jones' arrest came about after the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home of her mother when family said they couldn't get a hold of her. Marsha was found dead on Monday “with no signs of violence," according to Meyer.

As Meyer noted, the investigation initially began on Sept. 19, following a burglary at Marsha’s house. At the time, the department determined that two men — Steven White and Nathaniel Kane Napier — burglarized the home "with the assistance of Marsha’s daughter Ashley Jones," per the release.

After seizing Marsha’s phone, investigators found alleged texts between Jones and her mother as they "discussed murdering Marsha’s husband" with poison in December 2022, per authorities.

An obituary for Harold notes that he was 52 years old when he "passed away suddenly" on Dec. 20. A mourning friend wrote on his memory wall at the time that he "spoke often and fondly of" Marsha.

"Law enforcement officers then served a search warrant at Marsha’s home and seized additional electronic devices in an effort to find evidence. While executing the search warrant, officers spoke with Marsha," Meyer stated in the release.

He added: "Following the interview of Marsha, officers released Marsha while officers continued their investigation."

Less than a month after the break in, and after Marsha was found dead in her home this week, Jones confessed to officers that she ordered the poison off the internet, and claimed that her mother placed it in Harold's drink, per the release.

Jones is now listed on the inmate roster on the Jackson County Sheriff's website with the note, "Bond Pending or No Bond Required."

The office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for additional comment on Thursday.

Meyer noted on Facebook that Jones' arrest is part of an "ongoing investigation."
