A mother from North Carolina has been arrested and charged following the deaths of her 4-year-old twin sons.

According to a statement shared by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook Sunday, the police and the Cherokee County Emergency Services responded to a house in Murphy on Saturday morning after receiving a 911 call from the twins’ father.

Per the statement, the father told authorities that after arriving at the home of his separated wife to exercise custody of his sons, he “discovered his twin sons deceased.”

The twins’ mother, Genevieve Ellen Springer, was hospitalized in Georgia and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, authorities said. After being released from the hospital on Saturday, Springer was arrested in Union County, Georgia.

Per the release, “Springer waived extradition and was transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center on March 3, 2024 where she is currently held without bond.”

The date and time of the twins’ death is currently under investigation, according to the sheriff’s office. The twins’ father told authorities the last time he saw his sons alive was Feb. 26.

“The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is hopeful that autopsies will narrow down the date and time of the twins’ passing,” authorities said, per the release.
