'Modern Family' stars react to announcement show is ending: 'Will be hard to say goodbye'

Modern Family will soon be part of TV history. The family comedy will be ending after Season 11.

The announcement was made by ABC president Karey Burke at the 2019 Television Critics Association winter press tour. It means we’ll say goodbye to the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker crew in 2020.

While Twitter is flooded with show GIFs in reaction to the news — like Eric Stonestreet’s Cam crying and Sofia Vergara’s Gloria motioning cut — cast members are reacting, as well. Jesse Tyler Ferguson wrote that it will be “hard to say goodbye. Love my family.”

Stonestreet shared a series of pictures, including one he took on the way to audition for the show on Feb. 4, 2009. “I’m so thankful and grateful to have had this job for the last 10 years and that I get to do it for ONE MORE year with this talented group of beauties,” he wrote

Modern Family, created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, debuted in September 2009. The show, which features a mockumentary style where the characters sometimes talk into the camera, won early acclaim — and a ton of awards — as it followed the family’s escapades under patriarch Ed O’Neill.

Sofia Vergara became TV’s highest-paid actress thanks to her role as O’Neill’s wife. Ed alum Julie Bowen had a triumphant return to the tube. Burrell, Ferguson and Stonestreet all became stars. And we watched the “kids” — Hyland, Ariel Winter, Gould and Rodriguez — grow up onscreen. They are all in their 20s now.

The show also provided visibility for gay couples with kids, thanks to Cam and Mitchell’s storyline.

Vergara told Yahoo Entertainment last week just how much she’d come to love her character.

“It’s been a pleasure and an honor to be able to play Gloria Pritchett on TV,” Vergara said. “I lived around a woman that reminded me a lot of Gloria. You know, very colorful, very passionate, very loud, very fun. I wouldn’t change anything about Gloria.”

The final season is expected to kick off in September and conclude in May 2020. And don’t rule out a spin-off. Burke said during the panel, “I would love it. No one would be happier if there were one.”
