‘Moana 2’ trailer is here and teases new music with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson

Another musical adventure at sea.

Disney dropped the first trailer for “Moana 2” Wednesday with Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson back as the voices of Moana and Maui, respectively.

The trailer also features new music for the highly anticipated Disney sequel, which arrives in theaters in November.

The first “Moana” film came out in 2016 and grossed over $687 million worldwide. It scored two Oscar nominations, including Best Original Song for “How Far I’ll Go.”

At the start of the trailer, Moana gets a call from her ancestors “to sail to new skies and reconnect our people across the entire ocean.”

Then, thrilling new music plays as Moana heads out on her next adventure — and she’s not alone.

Moana’s rooster Heihei and pig Pua join her, as does Johnson’s Maui, who makes an epic arrival on her boat.

“Bacon and eggs!” Maui says while holding Moana’s pets in each of his hands.

“Why didn’t you bring the pig last time?” he asks.

The synopsis for the film reads: “Moana is on an expansive journey in search of people beyond the shores of Motunui. Joined by Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”

Disney announced the “Moana” sequel in February with a surprise first-look teaser.

In April, Johnson, 52, took the stage at CinemaCon after a performance by Polynesian dancers and shared a sneak peek at the film.

“Playing the character of Maui is one of the most life-changing life experiences for me and life-changing roles,” Johnson said to the crowd.

“It’s my culture. You guys can see I wear it on my chest, my body, my tattoo, and also the character of Maui was inspired from my grandfather, the high chief, Peter Maivia,” he added. “It’s so much deeper than a movie to me, and I know it’s deeper for Disney, too.”

Johnson also promised “an all-new crew, all new setting and, of course, new songs — you’re welcome” in the sequel.

David G. Derrick Jr. directed and wrote “Moana 2.” Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa’i return as the composers with Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear replacing Lin-Manuel Miranda as additional songwriters.

Disney is also working on a live-action “Moana” film, set for release in July 2026. Johnson is reprising his role as Maui.

“Moana 2” will hit theaters Nov. 27, 2024.
