MLB auctioning off Stoneman Douglas caps with proceeds going to shooting victims
On Friday, Major League Baseball honored the victims of the Parkland shooting by wearing Stoneman Douglas High School caps during a spring training game. Now, the league is putting those caps up for sale, with all the proceeds going toward the victims of the shooting.
The league is auctioning off game-worn, autographed caps on MLBshop.com. All money spent on the caps will go toward the Stoneman Douglas Victims’ Fund at Broward Education Foundation.
There are countless number of caps available. MLB’s website has 21 pages full of players, from stars like Bryce Harper and Kris Bryant, to some players on the fringes of the 25-man roster.
While you might wonder why fans would want to buy a cap worn by a player who might not sniff the majors, it actually seems like a smart move by the league. Some of the caps are going for as low at $5. It’s a way for all fans to get involved in the bidding. They don’t have to spend hundreds to help, and they get an autographed cap out of it.
The Victim’s Fund has raised over $2.6 million thus far. After MLB’s auctions end, that total will hopefully be higher than the school’s $3 million goal.
