Mitt Romney Continues His Crusade Against Donald Trump on 'Today'

Matt Lauer sat down with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney Friday on Today. During a speech Thursday, Romney referred to the Republican candidate as a “phony and a fraud.” Romney doubled down on those comments Friday. “I think he would be terribly unfit for office,” said Romney. “I don’t think he has the temperament to be president, so I want to see one of the other three to be the nominee. Now by the way, after March 15, I think you’ll see it narrow down to one or two contenders opposing Donald Trump, and I intend to support one of them.”

Lauer was quick to point out that four years ago, when Romney was running for president, he gladly accepted Trump’s endorsement. Romney defended himself. “Well first of all, I was seeking his endorsement, and now he’s seeking mine,” the former governor explained. “That’s very different. A lot of people that endorse me, I wouldn’t endorse for president. And secondly, a lot has happened in the last year. And frankly, had I heard him say the things I’ve heard him say now, I wouldn’t have welcomed his endorsement.”

Romney also squashed rumors that he is positioning himself to run for president if the Republican National Convention is contested. Romney has spoken out against Trump, but has yet to endorse another nominee. Slightly coy at the prospect, Lauer asked him to give a definitive answer. “I’m not running for president,” he said. “And I won’t run for president.”
