Mitski has unveiled “Star” and “Heaven,” two new songs from her forthcoming album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We. She also unveiled a string of European tour dates for October.
According to a press release, both “Star” and “Heaven” were written a few years ago, and have been biding their time, waiting to be adapted and encompassed into a larger work. As The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We began coming together, that moment finally arrived — Mitski teamed up with arranger and conductor Drew Erickson, the two recruited a full orchestra, and versions of both songs were cut, with a sense of openness and subtle craftsmanship that perfectly fits into the album’s sound.
“Star” and “Heaven” constitute the second taste of The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We that Mitski has offered. Last month, she shared the album’s first single, “Bug Like an Angel,” which was named as Consequence’s Song of the Week. Writing about the song, Consequence’s Editorial Coordinator, Jonah Krueger, explained that “the track proves that Mitski can mine emotionality out of even her most low-key, stripped-back tunes.” If “Star” and “Heaven” are any indication, it seems that this powerful and skillful conveyance of emotion will extend to the album as a whole.
And if you’d like to hear that album live unplugged, you can do so… in Europe, that is. Along with the singles, Mitski has also unveiled a handful of “intimate, acoustic” dates for this upcoming October, where she’ll “preview” the new album.
