Mitch McConnell Finally Gave an Honest Answer on Who's Paying for the Wall
In today's Big, Beautiful Wall news, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell brought some refreshing honesty to the conversation. Unlike President Trump, who campaigned on a plan to build The Wall on our southern border and long suggested it would be as high as 50 feet tall and be entirely physical, McConnell admitted there would be areas where there are more effective methods of curtailing illegal immigration. He also made it clear who-or who wouldn't-be paying for it:
"Um, no," he said simply-Mexico is not going to pay for it. This is an important distinction, since many of the people who've been chanting that we should build it at large gatherings of the economically insecure over the last 18 months were under the impression they wouldn't be paying for it. For all those Michiganders who voted for the president, the prospect of footing the $21 billion bill for a wall 2,000 miles away might make the whole thing seem a little less attractive.
Apparently, McConnell's view is less in line with President Trump's than it is with former Mexican President Vicente Fox:
McConnell's candid answer was a nice break from the deluge of misinformation and cynicism on immigration, and from his default position of extreme cynicism on any issue. The chuckles that greeted his answer were less so. That's the sound of those Michigan voters getting taken for a ride.
