Missing California Woman Found Dead in Arizona Desert After Over a Month: 'We Have Many Questions'

Amanda Nenigar was reported missing on Feb. 28 and her car was found about a week later

A 27-year-old woman who had been missing in a remote area near the Arizona-California border since February has been found dead, authorities said.

The body of Amanda Nenigar was found south of Cibola, Arizona, on Friday, according to the La Paz County Sheriff’s Office and the Associated Press.

Nenigar was located under a tree about 1½ miles away from her abandoned car, the AP reported.

The woman was last seen in Blythe, California, and her 2010 Toyota Camry was found about a week later, the sheriff’s office said, under “bizarre” circumstances.

“The rear end of the vehicle was on a large boulder,” La Paz County Sheriff William Ponce told CBS affiliate KTVK/KPHO. “When you have a vehicle that’s abandoned and you don’t have kind of inkling where the person has gone or anything, it all seems very odd to us and it’s very concerning.”

A 911 call Nenigar placed on Feb. 27 surfaced shortly after her disappearance, in which she told authorities that she was stuck in a ditch.

According to KTVK/KPHO, the call was routed to California dispatchers even though she was in Arizona.

Nenigar was last seen wearing a pink hooded sweatshirt, black leggings, black and white tennis shoes, a thin bracelet and carrying a pink purse.

On Friday, her body was discovered without clothes, and authorities believe she may have been trying to cool off under the tree before she died, possibly from exposure, per KTVK/KPHO. Her clothes were found near her body.

While an autopsy is pending, Nenigar’s family members are devastated by the circumstances of her death.

“I don’t understand how they didn’t find her. I’m still in shock,” Amanda’s sister, Marissa Nenigar, told KTVK/KPHO.

In a statement obtained by KTVK/KPHO, Amanda's family also thanked those who helped search for the 27-year-old.

"The family is incredibly grateful to have people like each of you who have volunteered and dedicated their time and resources into finding her," their statement said.

"We have many questions and have been informed that her death is being investigated and an autopsy will follow," the family added. "Our hearts are broken and we will miss her dearly."
