Missing 16-Year-Old Found Dead in Virginia Woods After 3-Day Search, Foul Play Not Suspected

The body of a teen who had been missing for three days was found Thursday in a wooded area in Virginia, said authorities.

In a news release obtained by PEOPLE on Monday, the Chesterfield County Police Department said that authorities identified the victim as Laura C. Harris, 16, of Midlothian, Virginia.

“At about 12:16 p.m. on March 7, police were called to the 2300 block of Charter Colony Parkway after a body was discovered in the area,” the statement read. “The body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. A cause of death has not yet been determined, but at this point there are no signs of foul play.”

The statement added that police are continuing their investigation.

Police said they received a report on March 4 that Harris ran away from home and they were investigating the matter and following up on tips as they came in.

CBS affiliate WTVR reported that some contractors who were driving by spotted what appeared to be a body in the woods, turned around and made the discovery about 100 yards behind a CVS store.

A GoFundMe was established by John Sims on behalf of Harris' mother, and it has raised over $40,000, far exceeding its original $20,000 goal.

“Unfortunately a mother's worst nightmare came to a tragic ending today when she got notified that her daughter had been found in a wooded area near Charter Colony,” Sims wrote in the fundraiser description. “Johanna is a amazing woman and even a better mom ... she has a heart of gold and [is] willing to help everyone in need it would be greatly appreciated if anyone could donate to help her in this difficult time with unexpected funeral cost and time out of work which she needs to have time for herself and loved ones around her."
