Hollywood heirs! Each year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association selects the child of a celebrity to carry the torch into awards season and assist with the annual Golden Globe Awards. The coveted title of Miss and Mr. Golden Globes dates back to 1963 when Donna Douglas and Eva Six shared the honor. The tradition of the role going to a celebrity kid, however, didn’t start until 1971 with Anne Archer, who went on to become a successful actress in her own right. Being Miss or Mr. Golden Globes — or the Golden Globes Ambassador as it was changed to in 2018 — does include a few in-show responsibilities. Throughout the event, the ambassador assists the presenters in handing out awards and escorting the winners from the stage. The role, however, also has a lasting effect on the stars who are lucky enough to receive the accolade. Melanie Griffith is one of many celebrities who eventually won her own Golden Globes trophy after being Miss Golden Globes in 1975. When her daughter Dakota Johnson assumed the role in 2006, the pair became the first mother-daughter duo to both earn the title. The Working Girl actress shares Dakota with ex-husband and Miami Vice alum Don Johnson. Griffith is also the mother of son Alexander Bauer, whom she shares we ex Steven Bauer and daughter Stella Banderas, whom she welcomed with ex Antonio Banderas in 1996. “We are delighted to have Dakota Johnson uphold the family tradition and help us celebrate the 63rd Annual Golden Globe Awards,” the HFPA announced via a press release at the time. “The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Board of Directors was unanimous in the decision to select this enchanting third-generation performer.” In January 2018, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s eldest daughter, Simone Johnson, was the first star to hold the new title of Golden Globes Ambassador. The change in title is not only gender neutral, but it expanded the role to better encompass the HFPA’s year-round philanthropic efforts. “Simone, I am so incredibly proud of you,” the Pacifier actor said during the 75th anniversary broadcast. Three years later, Spike Lee’s children, daughter Satchel and son Jackson Lee, made history themselves by becoming the first queer and male Black ambassadors, respectively, for the awards show. “We're proud to carry our father's legacy of storytelling to bring attention to communities close to our hearts,” Satchel said in a 2021 press release. The siblings chose to support Callen-Lorde, a global leader in LGBTQ+ healthcare, and Big Brothers Big Sisters, a non-profit that supports one-to-one mentoring for American youth as part of their duties.
