Miramax CEO Bill Block Exits After Six Years

After a six-year run leading Miramax, CEO Bill Block is exiting the studio, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Block’s contract at Miramax, co-owned by beIN Media Group and Paramount Global, expired this week and was not renewed. The executive started as CEO in April 2017.

The studio is looking to develop projects based on its own intellectual property rather than aiming to acquire projects, a source close to Miramax’s owners said. A search is underway for a new top executive.

Miramax, founded by Harvey and Bob Weinstein and then later purchased and sold by Disney, has largely been known in recent years for its expansive library of more than 700 films. However, since Block joined and its acquisition by BeIN and Paramount, the studio has tried to make a bigger push into producing and distribution with the relaunch of the Halloween franchise, as well as films such as The Gentleman, starring Matthew McConaughey and directed by Guy Ritchie, and Wrath of Man, also directed by Ritchie and starring Jason Statham.

Upcoming films include Here, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright; The Beekeeper, directed by David Ayer and starring Statham; and Harvest Moon, directed by Mark Waters and starring Paul Bettany and Candice Bergen.

BeIN, a Qatari state-owned global sport and entertainment company, purchased Miramax in 2016 and then sold the stake to Paramount in 2020.

Before coming to Miramax, Block was founder and CEO of production company QED and produced the films Bad Moms, Dirty Grandpa and District 9, among others. Earlier in his career, Block served as president of independent film studio Artisan Entertainment, which produced films such as The Blair Witch Project, The Buena Vista Social Club and Requiem for a Dream.
