Mipcom: TV Azteca and Keshet International Announce Scripted Content Co-production Deal

CANNES — A new co-production deal has been announced today between Mexico’s TV Azteca and Israel’s Keshet International. Per the deal, the two will co-develop and produce a new 60-part super series, which will be broadcast by Azteca in Mexico, while Keshet will handle international distribution.

The series will be Spanish-language and development will be led by Joshua Mintz, deputy president for TV Azteca, and Kelly Wright, VP of distribution and new business for Keshet.

Via a statement, Mintz said: “Keshet has a reputation for producing scripted series that stand apart from the crowd. We are genuinely excited about content we are going to create together.”

Wright continued: “As we continue our rapid expansion in Latin America, original development is a top priority. We have a true ‘meeting of minds’ with TV Azteca since it is known for producing bold, daring series that resonate with audiences across not only Mexico but much of the world – something we strive for every time.”

Keshet International is in the midst of growing its operations across Latin America, having earlier this year launched Keshet MX. The company also produces content with other Spanish-language and Latin American companies such as Telemundo in the U.S., Televisa in Mexico, Telefe in Argentina, Mega in Chile, and Globo in Brazil among others. The company’s catalog crosses all genres and platforms, and includes both original content and third party IP.

TV Azteca is Mexico’s second-largest mass-media company, and operates four TV networks: Azteca Trece, Azteca 7, ADN40 and a+. The company is also one of the two largest producers of Spanish-language content in the world. Azteca also has an international service, Azteca Trece Internacional, which is available in 13 countries across Central and Latin America. On Monday at a Mipcom Keynote, TV Azteca CEO Benjamin Salinas announced the creation of a new autonomous production unit called Dopamine, owned by the Grupo Salinas, which also owns TV Azteca.

With the deal, Keshet can continue to grow its Latin America and Spanish-language footprint, while TV Azteca picks up another another international industry mover-and-shaker to produce original content with.
