MIPCOM: Netflix Takes German Spy Drama 'The Same Sky'
Netflix has picked up German Cold War drama The Same Sky for multiple countries, including all English-speaking territories worldwide.
Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall), The Same Sky follows a East German 'Romeo' agent tasked with seducing an older woman in West Berlin with access to top-secret U.S. security information.
Tom Schilling (Generation War) stars as the idealistic agent, and Swedish actress Sofia Helin (The Bridge) plays his unwitting target. Friederike Becht and Ben Becker co-star.
Created by British writer Paula Milne (The Virgin Queen), The Same Sky intertwines the political history of the Cold War with the fate of a family divided, like their country, between East and West.
The project has its world premiere Monday at international TV market MIPCOM.
Produced by German public broadcaster ZDF, together with Ufa Fiction and Beta Film, The Same Sky will go out on free-to-air networks across most of Europe.
Beta, which is also selling the series worldwide, said it has closed deals with France 3 and French platform SFR, Italy's Rai, VRT in Belgium and Iceland's RUV. Beta pre-sold the series to Scandinavia's main public broadcasters - SVT in Sweden, Denmark's DR, NRK in Norway and Finland's YLE - earlier this year.
