Mipcom: London Distributors Drive Board Underwater Archaeology Docu ‘Lost World: Deeper into the Black Sea’ (EXCLUSIVE)

CANNES — The Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project (MAP) has announced the appointment of British sales company Drive to handle distribution on “Lost World: Deeper into the Black Sea,” the documentary feature of their recent Bulgarian-based underwater expeditions.

David Belton and Andy Byatt, best known for their Emmy and Bafta-winning series “Blue Planet,” are at the helm of “Lost World.” The directors and crew have recorded over the past three years and used the latest in underwater filming technologies to produce the 120-minute doc in 4K HD. Currently, “Lost World,” is in post-production.

Co-director Belton said of the opportunity to make the film: “It’s incredibly rare to join an expedition from the very outset and follow all the highs and lows of the journey, but we’ve managed it here,” documenting “a team of dedicated and passionate people finding the rarest of treasures.”

The Black Sea MAP is the largest maritime archaeological expedition in the history of the discipline. Led by University of Southampton professor Jon Adams, teams of underwater archaeologists have scoured the depths of the Black Sea and found dozens of ships, with the oldest dating as far back as the 4th or 5th century BC.

The expedition uses sonar and deep sea ROVs (remotely operated vehicles) to scan the bottom of the world’s largest meromictic body of water. This means that the movement of water between the upper and lower layers of the lake is among the lowest in the world, which creates an anoxic, low in oxygen, environment, ideal for the preservation of organic material.

Drive was launched four years ago and focuses on securing sales and funding for production companies. Their client list includes Oscar, Bafta and Emmy-winning Oxford Films, non-fiction TV producers Barcroft Productions, Universal’s October Films and a host of others. Most recently the company secured worldwide sales rights for “Diana Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy.”
