Karl-Anthony Towns out another 2 weeks with wrist injury, team not pursuing surgery

Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns will miss at least another two weeks while dealing with a fractured left wrist, the team announced on Friday.

The team, however, is not expected to pursue surgery and still holds out hope that he can make a return to the court this season.

Towns first suffered the injury after taking a hard fall in the Timberwolves’ 115-104 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Jan. 25. He played through the injury for a bit before the pain became too much, and the team shut him down just before the All-Star break. The 24-year-old hasn’t played since Feb. 10, and missed their last nine games.

Towns has averaged a career-high 26.5 points, 10.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 35 games so far this season, his fifth in the league after the Timberwolves used the No. 1 overall pick on him in 2015.

Minnesota, which has made the playoffs just once in the past 16 seasons, has struggled yet again this year. The team boasts just a 19-42 record, the second-worst in the Western Conference ahead of only the Golden State Warriors, and have won just four of its last 14 games heading into Friday’s contest against the Orlando Magic.

Towns’ return won’t right the ship in Minnesota this season. It could, however, give him more time to mesh with D’Angelo Russell — who the Timberwolves acquired just before the trade deadline and clearly hope can team up with Towns to help push the team into playoff contention in the near future. That could end up making a difference for years to come.
