Mindy Kaling Shares Her Simple but Important Advice for “The Office” Spinoff's New Cast: 'I Was Not Professional'

On May 8, Peacock announced that a spinoff series was officially in the works over a decade after the sitcom aired its final episode

Mindy Kaling has some words of advice for the next iteration of actors who will star in the new The Office spinoff!

During an appearance on SiriusXM's The Morning Mash Up on May 15, Kaling, who starred as Kelly Kapoor on the hit comedy as well as wrote and produced on the series, shared a good rule of thumb that the new actors should adhere by while filming their scenes.

"Try not to laugh," she said, explaining, "I ruined so many takes just because I'd be, like, laughing at Rainn Wilson and Steve Carell. I was not professional."

Though her character was "supposed to be horrified all the time," Kaling, 44, confessed that she had a lot of trouble keeping a straight face while surrounded by her hilarious cast members.

"In fact, I think I might be laughing on camera," she said. "I'm assuming that cast is gonna be as funny as the one we had, and there's so many great brains behind it, so that would be my thing is just learn not to break on camera."

Earlier this month, Peacock announced that a highly anticipated spinoff series for The Office was finally underway. Greg Daniels — who adapted the British version of the show — and Michael Koman have joined forces to bring a new hilarious story to viewers' screens, and they've found their stars.

Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore, the breakout star of season 2 of The White Lotus, are set to the lead the new Peacock series, which will begin production in July.

The unnamed comedy will see the same documentary crew that "immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch," making household names out of Michael Scott (Carell), Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) and Dwight Schrute (Wilson), among others, "in search of a new subject.

Though he has plans to tune in, Carell revealed that he wouldn't be involved in the upcoming project.

“I will be watching but I will not be showing up. It’s just a new thing and there’s really no reason for my character to show up in something like that,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “But I’m excited about it, it sounds like a great conceit. I love the idea — I guess it’s set in a failing newspaper company."

Krasinski also addressed the upcoming spinoff in conversation with PEOPLE at the IF movie premiere on May 13. When asked if he was involved with the project, the actor admitted, "I know nothing about it other than I think it's taking place in a newspaper, a local newspaper and that Domhnall Gleeson, who I am working with right now, who’s the sweetest most talented guy, he’s going to crush… whatever it is… he’s going to crush it."

As for whether Krasinski thought he'd reprise his role as Jim, he said, "No, they haven't asked but the truth is I’d do anything Greg Daniels asked me to do."
