Mindy Kaling Is Jealous of Rihanna’s Paparazzi Coverage on the Set of ‘Ocean’s Eight’
Mindy Kaling is definitely famous — The Office, The Mindy Project, I mean, c’mon. But now she’s in the cast of Ocean’s Eight, a new women-led spinoff of the Ocean’s franchise. The cast is filled to the brim with big-name ladies, including Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, and Sandra Bullock.
“I thought I was pretty cool,” she admitted while laughing about it to Seth Meyers on Late Night. “I have my own show. And there people think I’m Sandra Bullock’s assistant. And [the crew are] like, ‘Get out of the way! We need to bring Sandra her matcha tea.’ And I’m like, ‘I’m in a scene with her. Like, I’m not her assistant.’ And I’m like, ‘OK, whatever, yeah. I’ll go give her her matcha tea for her, might as well.’”
Kaling found herself enjoying being in the limelight, but soon learned that they were basically only following her because of Rihanna. “There was, like, a sea of paparazzi taking photos and everything like that,” she continued. “And I was kind of feeling cool and famous. And then Rihanna took a left to her trailer, which was, like, not in the same direction that me and Anne were going. And the paparazzi left so quickly. It was like a desert.”
When Meyers showed one of the shots of the cast on set (above), Kaling joked, “Just for the record, right? Like, I’m wearing a gorgeous coat, outfit, showing a lot of legs. Expensive shoes. Anne’s wearing a leather coat. Rihanna’s wearing, like, a full parka. And baggy jeans. They shoved me out of the way to get to her. Get out of the way, Sandra Bullock’s assistant!”
