Playful Mind Games in Pixar’s New 'Inside Out' Trailer

Pixar’s new Inside Out trailer gives us exactly what we all need in our lives: more Joy. Voiced by Amy Poehler, Joy is one of five personified emotions in the animated feature, which takes place mostly in the head of a preteen girl named Riley. Along with Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black, naturally), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Joy must help Riley cope with life’s changes after her family relocates from rural Minnesota to San Francisco.

While the previous trailer introduced us to Riley’s mother and father (who have their own sets of ruling emotions), this new one lets the characters in Riley’s head take center stage. As Joy tries to steer Riley’s brain back into a happy place, she guides the other emotions on a journey through the girl’s memory, imagination, and dreams. These scenes tease the full scope of Pixar’s production, with glimpses of scary clowns and rainbow unicorns, plus a unique interpretation of the words “brain freeze.” Inside Out is directed by Pete Doctor, whose previous Pixar films Up and Monsters, Inc. prove that he knows a little something about feelings. The film opens in theaters on June 19.
