Mina Starsiak Hawk May Arrive and Leave Early to Family's Holiday Gatherings to Avoid Flare-Ups Amid Rifts

The HGTV star had a candid conversation with her dad about how her falling out with brother Tad will affect their plans

Mina Starsiak Hawk is still figuring out her holiday plans amid rifts in her family — but she revealed she has come up with a possible solution.

In a new episode of her podcast Mina AF, the HGTV star reveals a candid conversation she had with her father on how her falling out with her brother Tad Starsiak will affect their gatherings throughout the season.

Mina says she needed to “set a boundary” with Tad, after he wrote “some pretty nasty stuff” to her.

“I have given him so many opportunities in life because of the hard work I’ve done,” Mina says of Tad, who appeared with her and her mom, Karen E. Laine, on their home renovation series Good Bones. “I’ve shared those opportunities, and they were never owed to him. But he very much acted that way and treats me that way and then said some s---ty things that ended with ‘sucks to suck.’”

“Usually in my family, we all suck it up and we just go to the thing and everyone plays nice and then talks s--- about each other behind their back,” she adds. “So I was like, ‘I’m going to disrupt the system.’”

But when Mina was picking up her kids from her father’s house recently, he confronted her about the situation. (She and husband Steve Hawk are parents to son Jack, 5, and daughter Charlie, 3.)

“You’ve got to talk to him,” her dad told her. “The holidays are coming up. Are you just not going to come to Thanksgiving? Are you not going to come to Christmas?”

Mina says she “laid it back on my dad’s doorstep for the first time” in her response.

“I said, ‘No one is telling him, ‘Make s--- right,’” she says. “And so I’m just not going to put myself in those situations. And I would ask you as the head of our family, if it’s very important for all of us to be able to be here together, to jump in. I would be happy to have some help in this situation, assessing it, solving it, making [Tad] understand maybe where he misstepped and how we can come back to a place of good.”
 
Mina says she doesn’t think her dad “really knew how to handle” her request.

“But I think that is the answer,” she continues. “What I will say to him is, ‘It’s important for me — my dad’s 75 — it’s important for me to spend the holidays with you. They are limited, so what’s a way that my family can be with you and my stepmom and my siblings in a way that I don’t have to sit at a table and pretend I’m okay making small talk with this person that’s treated me so poorly?”

While at the time of recording the podcast, Mina didn’t have definite plans for Thanksgiving or Christmas, she said one strategy would be to arrive early to events.

“Our Thanksgiving starts at 2, I’ll come at noon and I’ll help you get ready and the kids can hang out,” she says. “And they can help decorate cookies, or whatever that looks like. And maybe I’m comfortable staying a little bit into when [Tad’s] there. And maybe there’s a point when I’m not.”

Mina has been open about tensions among her family members during previous conversations on her podcast, saying she wasn’t “in a great place” with either Tad or her mom.

Ahead of Good Bones’ series finale in October, she reflected on what she wishes she had known before finding fame on the long-running renovation show.

“I think I knew … that this was going to be hard and it was going to challenge relationships, because when you put anything under a spotlight, in a pressure cooker, there’s the opportunity to explode,” she said. “And I myself am not stable enough to not explode at times."

Mina noted that her "whole complicated family organization," many members of which were involved in her business and in the creation of Good Bones, includes a lot of different personalities and "people with so many different issues, weaknesses, things left to learn.”

She added, “I just wish I had known how bad it could be.”
