A new beer garden and taproom is planning to open in Milwaukee next to Wisconsin's only urban state forest.

Havenwoods Taproom and Beer Garden is gearing up to open later this year at 5840 N 60th St. next to Havenwoods State Forest on the northwest side of Milwaukee.

The taproom and beer garden will have more than a dozen taps with both local and international brews.

The indoor open-concept space will be 1,500 square feet, combined with about 12,000 square feet of outdoor space.

"We're looking to create space in the area for community gatherings and to come hang out and converse with each other," owner Chase Jaffray said. "It's kind of out there for people who are on the outskirts of Milwaukee metro. They don't have to go all the way downtown to find the same atmosphere."

Jaffray said they are hoping to host farmers markets and live music. They also are planning to have food trucks lined up in the alleyway between the taproom and beer garden.

Havenwoods Taproom and Beer Garden will have five acres of forest on the property with a walking path for patrons, including those with dogs, which are welcome in the outdoor beer garden.

"It’s a large space and a lot of opportunity. It's a great use of the space," Jaffray said.

That's in addition to the nearby urban forest that spans 237 acres and is home to more than 6 miles of hiking trails that wind through woods, wetlands and grasslands.

Jaffray won't be brewing anything at the space, but will rely on local and imported craft beer to fill the draft lines. He wants to host occasional tap takeovers with brewers from outside of Milwaukee to bring new brews to the city.

The space was formerly home to Pereles Brothers, Inc., a plastics manufacturer, which closed in October 2020. Jaffray will be renting the building from a friend who purchased it two years ago.

Jaffray is looking to open later this year, sometime between October and December.
