Milwaukee Arts Board names Laster, Goodrum its 2024 artists of the year

The Milwaukee Arts Board has named artist-gallery proprietor Fatima Laster and filmmaker-writer Justin Goodrum its 2024 Mildred L. Harpole Artists of the Year.
Visual artist Laster is curator and proprietor of 5 Points Art Gallery + Studios, 3514 N. Port Washington Ave. She is also the winner of a 2023 Nohl fellowship and was guest curator of the 2022 Wisconsin Triennial at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art.
Goodrum, a 2024 Nohl fellowship winner, has created a short documentary on mental health disparities in Milwaukee's Black community as well as the short film "The Stigma of the Durag," which was presented on Milwaukee PBS' "Black Nouveau" in 2023.
The arts board also named Jacobo Lovo and Jessica Meuninck-Ganger its 2024 Friends of the Arts, awards for individuals who give exceptional service to the local arts community. Lovo is managing artistic director of Latino Arts. Meuninck-Ganger is associate professor of printmaking and book arts at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Peck School of the Arts.
Artists of the Year receive a $1,500 cash award. Funds for the award come from arts board members.
Former alderman and playwright Wayne Frank launched the board's Artists of the Year program in 1995. The Artists of the Year Award was renamed in 2020 in honor of late arts board member Mildred L. Harpole.
This is the second year that the Milwaukee Arts Board accepted award nominations from the public. The award winners will be honored during an event at 4:30 p.m. June 11 at the Milwaukee City Hall rotunda, 200 E. Wells St.
Past artists of the year include Ben Tyjeski, Paul Druecke, Nirmal Raja, Ck Ledesma, Klassik, Anne Kingsbury, Rosy Petri and Ras ‘Ammar Nsoroma.
