When Milo Machado Graner started the process of auditioning for “Anatomy of a Fall,” he didn’t really know that much about the project. “I went to the audition, which lasted about five minutes and there was some improvisation. It didn’t last very long and I didn’t think much of it,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above).

When he got the call to come back for a second audition, writer/director Justine Triet was there and worked thoroughly with Graner. “I did a lot of work with her and she put me to the test and worked on a scene that needed a lot of emotion and she pushed me and worked with me and brought me to the point where I got emotional and started crying right during the audition.”

SEEJustine Triet (‘Anatomy of a Fall’ director) on how she cast Antoine Reinartz as the ruthless prosecutor [Exclusive Video Interview]

“Anatomy of a Fall,” which is currently available to rent on various platforms, centers on Sandra (Sandra Hüller). When her husband is discovered dead from falling off a roof by their blind son Daniel, Sandra becomes the main suspect and gets charged for the crime. She then has to fight against a ruthless prosecutor who seeks to get her convicted of the crime which she says she is innocent of. Back in May, the film won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, making Triet only the third woman to ever win the prize. At the Golden Globes this past Sunday, Triet took home two trophies: Best Screenplay and Best Non-English Language Film.

Though many scenes were difficult to shoot, Graner felt that the scene where he testified during his mother’s trial was the most difficult to get right. In addition to all the text, he also had to wear contact lenses for his character and Triet felt that he wasn’t appearing to be truthful with his performance. “They did many, many takes and then at the moment when I would get fatigued is when Justine would feel like I got to the truth of the scene. They were very long and repetitive, but in the end I’m not sure how I did it, but she thought that I had gotten to the truth of the scene.”
